“Francisco “Chico” Buarque de Hollanda, popularly known simply as Chico Buarque (born June 19, 1944) is a Brazilian singer-songwriter, guitarist, composer, playwright, writer and poet. He is best known for his music, which often includes social, economic and cultural commentary on Brazil. The following is one of his most famous protest songs entitled “In Spite of You.” It is a song about calling for participation in making Brazil (our world) a better place, despite resistance from those in power, indicating positive change will prevail and come sooner than you think. A message that we may need after last week’s political events.
